Muir, California [May 1999]

Having visited Muir the previous winter, I wanted to get some photos of trains entering and leaving Tunnel 2. However, the tunnel is only lit during the very early morning hours, which meant leaving home at 0500. The climb up Mt. Wanda is a relatively simple one, with a staircase that ends right at the tunnel.

Morning trains through Franklin Canyon are scarce, especially eastbounds. Fortunately, a light engine move from Stockton to Richmond showed up at just the right time. Here, the engines boil across the trestle.
The aging warbonnets cruise past...
...and as a bonus, the correct shot appears.
