Portland Union Station, Oregon [May 2001]

On a clear afternoon, Union Station forms part of the city skyline. Even in springtime, Portland sees a lot of sunny days.
Interlocking Towers are another disappearing feature on the railroad scene. This ornate brick tower at the south end of Union Station stands guard at the intersection of BNSF and UP rails. No longer manned, the metal shed nearby houses the communications gear which has replaced the tower operator.
Late in the afternoon, an Amtrak SW1200 puts together the Portland section of the Empire Builder.
A gateway to the city for more than a century, Portland Union Station completes another day of service.
